DRIVING TEST GENERALLY

A Driving Test is the official assessment procedure to evaluate and ensure driving competency and ability. Tests vary by state/country, but typically consist of a behind the wheel road test and a written test

THE ROAD TEST

Also known as the behind the wheel test or practical test; its purpose is to assess actual driving competency, ability, and safety, in the physical driving environment. The road test verifies a drivers knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations in practice.

Some States include maneuverability testing as part of the road test, for adeptness testing.  This is particularly common for motorcycle license testing.

THE WRITTEN TEST

These tests are written examinations that assess the technical driving knowledge, knowledge of traffic laws and rules, and safety.   Testing varies by state, but testing is usually divided in two parts one for a drivers permit and the other for a driver’s license.
